How to start using att apple iphone 2g with att sim card?

hello; i just purchased used iphone 2g. i am current with att and i inserted the sim card but i am unable to get service. after i insert the sim card it say "connect to itunes" therefore i need to know if somebody can help on how to make the iphone work with my sim card

    You have to activate your phone through iTunes to use it. After you insert your SIM card into the phone, connect the phone to the computer using the USB cable that came with the phone. Start up iTunes and wait for your phone to show up in the device list. After that all you have to do is fill out the registration information and wait for the phone to get activated.
