Is it true that cellphones from service providers are set to half range?

I heard that service providers set the cellular phones they offer to half range instead of full range. By doing that one tower can service more cellphones, but the reception is also drastically worse. Is that true? I heard that unlocked cellphones are set to full range and therefore get a lot better signal.

    Hi mayerj72,

I can tell you someone is pulling your leg.

Cutting down the range is the last thing providers want to do. They get enough complaints as it is. In addition they would need a lot more towers closer together.

The providers wish they could have the minimum power level increased. It is currently set by the government to (hopefully) prevent health issues caused by the radio waves they emit.
